Environment: Merrill Lynch are one of the world’s largest investment banks. They employ 6,500 people in London alone. They are widely renowned for their high-quality IT purchasing policy, and have been world leaders in financial markets IT. They are a Compaq, Microsoft, Sun, Cisco & Ascend site.
Duties & Responsibilities:
My role at Merrills was specifically to manage the 800-user Remote Access system. This system supports ISDN router, ISDN T/A and asynchronous modem users. Security is based on Ascend Radius and ACE SecureID running on Sun Solaris servers. The system also includes redundancy and Sun-based Firewall/1 application level filtering. My role involved the maintenance and support of the central site Ascend Maxen, as well as connection & authentication issues for the remote users.
As a part of this role I evaluated various other Radius products with a view to replacing the current non-Y2K compliant system. At the time of this writing it appears that the current system will be entirely phased out by 1 January 2000, replaced by an outsourced IBM Windows NT PPTP-VPN/Internet solution, based on the Windows 2000 dialler, which I have been involved in testing.
Remote Access being about 70% of my responsibility, the rest of my time was dedicated to LAN/WAN support. This specifically involved support of the Cisco routers and switches that make up the European “DataHighway” network. This included the use of network analysis and management tools such as Cabletron Spectrum & NetScout. It also involved liaison with the various telecomms providers regarding various different data links including Frame Relay, ISDN and FDDI links.

They are one of the few Cisco Gold Partners, an attribute obtained through having the highest level of Cisco technical and sales qualifications available. Among others, they are also partners with Microsoft, Novell & 3Com.
Duties & Responsibilities:
My role specifically entailed meeting with clients and potential clients, analysing their current and future requirements and presenting them with options for improvement & change. I would then typically put together a formal proposal including a technical design, along with a costs & benefits analysis. I would often be called upon to present these proposals to both technical and non-technical management. If the client decided to go ahead with the proposal then my role would change to that of client liaison and project co-ordinator. I would choose the staff from the implementation team and depending on the scale of the project, a project manager. It would be my responsibility to then ensure client satisfaction with all aspects of the project.

This project used some 15 technical implementation staff of varying skill sets that were answerable to myself through the project manager until completion.
This design was implemented during April & May 1998 ahead of schedule and resulted in an extension of MemTel’s services to other organisations in the newly privatised Australian employment services industry.

This complex design and implementation used the latest technology. I was personally responsible for 5 high level technicians including CCIEs and MCSEs. This was a high level consultancy where the NSW Police Service required a thorough plan & design for the commencement of movement away from their extensive mainframe services to client/server NT based applications. I was required to form relations with Microsoft Consulting Services and to consistently liase with various levels of Police Service hierarchy to ensure satisfactory completion of the design.
The NSWPS domain has now been implemented and encompasses over 200 physical locations and approximately 16,000 users.
